A Rangers outfielder is slugging, the Marlins have an emerging ace lefty and the Tigers have surprising power from an outfielder. Troy Polamalu Jersey . - Surely wee all aware of Josh Hamilton, the AL Triple Crown leader who slugged a game-winning homer against the Twins in extras Thursday, but what about teammate David Murphy? The 26-year-old former Red Sox prospect is on a nine-game hitting streak, during which hes 18-for-43 (.419) with two homers and nine RBI. With 31 RBI in 490 games, Murphy is on pace to top 100 RBI for the season. - Marlins LHP Andrew Miller had an impressive showing against the Diamondbacks (5 H, 1 BB, 0 ER, 9 K in 7 IP) and has a 1.44 ERA in his last four starts. Even with a 5.33 ERA for the season, Millers worth a pickup in most leagues. - Tigers RF Matt Joyce had shown decent power in the minors (33 doubles, 17 homers at Double-A last season; six doubles, five homers in 97 at-bats at Triple-A this year), but nothing like what hes doing in the bigs. The 23-year-old has mashed five homers in his first 38 at-bats and is slugging .722. If you need outfield help, hes worth a trial run. - Royals C/DH Miguel Olivo continues to push for more playing time with his hot bat. In his last eight games, Olivo is 11-for-29 (.379), with six doubles, two homers and nine RBI. - He didnt get the win, but Orioles RHP Brian Burres had a terrific start against the Yankees (6 H, 0 BB, 1 ER, 5 K in 7 2/3 IP). Burres has help opponents to three runs or fewer in seven of his nine starts. - Even though hes not hitting for power, Braves 1B Mark Teixeira is heating up. On a six-game hitting streak, Big Tex is 12-for-22 (.545) with six RBI, but has just one homer in the last 27 games. - Astros RHP Roy Oswalt didnt take the loss, but surrendered 11 hits in six innings against the Phillies. Its the fourth time this season that Oswalt has allowed double-digit hits and hes allowing a .302 opponents batting average, up from .265 last season. - White Sox LHP Mark Buehrle isnt getting strikeouts, but has put up back-to-back quality starts (9 H, 7 BB, 2 ER, 3 K in 13 2/3 IP), which makes him worth looking at in deeper leagues. - Likewise, the lefty that Buehrles White Sox beat Thursday, Indians LHP Aaron Laffey (6 H, 1 BB, 2 ER, 6 K in 7 IP), is well worth a pickup. Though Laffey is just 2-3 in five starts, he has a 1.60 ERA and 0.89 WHIP. - Diamondbacks LHP Doug Davis is slated to start Friday, returning from lymphoma surgery. - Red Sox RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka ran his record to 8-0 after beating the Royals on Thursday, but for leagues that count WHIP, Dice-K wasnt a big help, allowing six hits and six walks in 5 2/3 innings. In the spirit of those players who work the count (or swing freely), heres look at the most, and least, discerning batting eyes. Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, whose government swept to power in an August landslide election victory that unseated a long-ruling conservative party, said key objectives include creating new jobs, cutting public works spending, and giving cash to families with children. Tweet TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -- Steve Yzerman can downplay the victory all he wants. But many of the 21 players who participated in the Tampa Bay Lightning prospect teams 4-3 shootout win against Detroit will never forget it. In one of the more thrilling finishes to any game in the 13-year history of the Traverse City NHL Prospects Tournament, Yzermans band of youngsters got the win via a 16-round shootout before a loud and boisterous capacity crowd at Center Ice Arena. It was one of the most anticipated contests on the docket this week since it pitted Yzerman, the former Red Wings legend and current Tampa Bay General Manager, against his former employer. The battle lines were drawn, too, as Yzerman sat with his director of pro scouting, Pat Verbeek, in one corner of the rink, while the Red Wings brass, including GM Ken Holland and assistant GM Jim Nill, were perched in their usual suite directly opposite. "I really didnt think about facing the Red Wings much. I was hoping our kids would play better than last game (a 4-2 loss) and I was focusing on watching our players and trying to get a good feel for them because, by the end of this tournament, we have to decide where these kids are going and what were doing with them." -- Steve Yzerman There were no friendly wagers placed and no handshakes prior to the opening faceoff. Deep down, though, youd have to think opposing a team for which you previously spent 27 years of your life isnt a tad bizarre. "I really didnt think about facing the Red Wings much," Yzerman said. "I was hoping our kids would play better than last game (a 4-2 loss) and I was focusing on watching our players and trying to get a good feel for them because, by the end of this tournament, we have to decide where these kids are going and what were doing with them." Tampa Bay goalie Jaroslav Janus, who stopped 40 shots in regulation and overtime and turned away 14 of 16 shooters in the shootout, admitted the game had a little extra meaning to the players. "Our coach (Jon Cooper) told us we can win it for Stevie, so Im pretty excited we did and now Im hoping we will play really well the rest of the tournament," Janus said. "We did a good job offensively and defensively, but struggled for two minutes there in the third when Detroit came back. But we stuck together and won a hockey game." Tampa Bay, which never has won this tournament, held a 3-1 lead entering the third period before Detroits Tomas Tatar and Trevor Parkes each connected in the opening 3:27 of the third to square the contest. The teams battled to a scoreless five-minute, 4-on-4 overtime before entering a shootout that looked as though it never would end. Matt Butcher connected for the eventual game-winner when he beat Detroit goalie Jordan Pearce between his pads before Janus stoned Willie Coetzee to seal the deal for Yzerman and the Lightning. p; Traverse City Prospects Tournament Pietrangelo ready to junk rookie status Mike G. Authentic Johnny Knox Jersey. Morreale - NHL.com Staff Writer Alex Pietrangelo is once again competing for the St. Louis Blues at the Traverse City NHL Prospects Tournament, but chances are he wont be coming back again. "You just hope your team can trust that you can stop it, and then prepare mentally for it. I waited for the shooter to make the first move and then just stop the puck." Janus, who last season split time between Tampa Bays American Hockey League affiliate, the Norfolk Admirals, and the Ontario Hockey Leagues Erie Otters, is hoping to make a good impression at the Traverse City tournament. The Slovakian-born goalie represented his country at the 2009 World Junior Championship in Ottawa and was even voted to the tournament all-star team. He was drafted by the Lightning in the sixth round (No. 162) in the 2009 Entry Draft and signed by the club last January. "Everyone wants to come here and show what you have and impress the scouts," he said. "I hope well keep winning and win the tournament. For me, Id like to play in the AHL … or the NHL. Its every players dream and hopefully I can make it one day." Yzerman knows there are plenty of jobs on the line in Traverse City. "All these kids come into camp with the hope that no matter how long a shot they have, they have a shot," Yzerman said. "Wednesday night well decide if (2010 first-round pick Brett Connolly) is coming down to camp with us or going back to junior. Whoever comes to camp will play in some exhibition games." Janus will most likely begin the season with Norfolk. He went 7-6 with a 2.07 goals-against average and .922 save percentage with them last season and in 13 OHL games with Erie, he was 7-4-2, a 2.81 GAA and .918 save percentage. Yzerman, who had praise for Connolly, Dana Tyrell and Carter Ashton when prodded, was as stern-faced after the game as he was before it. "I was just sitting with our staff talking before the game and then the game got started so I was just sitting there watching and talking players," Yzerman said. "Im just trying to focus on watching the players. Its a prospects tournament in early September. The Red Wings will play a meaningful game against the Tampa Bay Lightning later in the season (Feb. 17) and itll be meaningful for both of us for various reasons at that time, so Ill look forward to that."
