EDMONTON -- Jamie Varner plans to win one for his mother this Fathers Day by knocking off Kamal Shalorus and proving hes worthy of a shot at recapturing his World Extreme Cagefighting lightweight belt. Its the least he can do for her, given they now have matching tattoos. The bout between Varner (16-3-2) and Shalorus (6-0-1) is the main event of WEC 49 at Rexall Place. It marks the first foray into Canada for the nine-year-old circuit. The winner has been promised a title shot against current 155-pound champion Ben (Smooth) Henderson. Sitting in the front row Sunday will be Varners 46-year-old mother, Lisa, dressed in her trademark black hoodie with the red letters on the back that read "Varners Mom." "I dont know where Id be without my mom," the Arizona fighter said Friday at a pre-fight news conference at Rexall Place. "She introduced me to the sport and supported me. To find a mom that will support her child to compete and become a fighter, thats a unique individual. "Shell be the loudest, craziest fan in the crowd, for sure." Lisa, in a phone interview from Phoenix, said she and Jamie talk pretty much every day. She introduced him to an MMA fighter when he was 17. Jamie signed up and would come home every night a bloody mess after being pinned, kneed, armbarred, punched and choked -- a teen completely in love with the sport. Varner, now 25, lost his title in January to Henderson at WEC 46 in Sacramento, Calif. Henderson submitted him via guillotine choke in the third round. Varner admitted later he was distracted going into the fight, citing his mother being diagnosed with cervical cancer. She was there that night, sitting in the front row. Varner came by and gave her a kiss before getting into the Octagon and suffering perhaps the most devastating setback of his career. "It was heartbreaking," said Lisa. "He hasnt lost too many times in his life. I dont think we saw the best Jamie Varner (that night)." "I just didnt have that fire. It was weird," said her son. The cancer surgery was a success, said Lisa, who is making her first trip to Edmonton this weekend. It will also be the first fight for Lisa with her new body artwork. Varner has a tattoo of a star on the front of each shoulder. Two months ago, in a show of support, Lisa had an identical star put on the back of each of her shoulder blades. She remembers his shocked reaction. "Mom, youre just too much," she said with a laugh. "Hey, Im his biggest fan." Trouble first started for Varner a year and a half ago, in January 2009. He defended his lightweight title against Donald (Cowboy) Cerrone via a split decision in a fight that went to the judges scorecards prematurely because of an illegal knee -- deemed unintentional -- that dazed Varner midway through the fifth round. it was a painful, pyrrhic victory. Varner broke a finger on his right hand and fractured his left foot. His hand needed multiple surgeries, six screws, a plate and a year to repair. He played video games to strengthen it and bring it back to fighting form. In the meantime, Henderson captured the interim title by beating Cerrone, then took out Varner at Sacramento. Varner said that loss still sticks in his throat. "Its not about where you start. Its how you finish. And Ben finished that fight. Do I think he can do it again? No, no I dont. Do I feel Im the better fighter? Yes. I feel Im the best lightweight fighter in the WEC." He said the defeat helped him focus for Sundays bout at Rexall. "It lit a fire under me. That centred me. It grounded me. It really made me want to go back to my roots -- that hunger, that fire." He said it didnt change his training regimen, "but it made me cut out all the distractions I had in my life, people, things, anything holding me back. "My life for the past four months has been eat, sleep, train." Varner knows hell have his hands full against the fighter nicknamed "The Prince of Persia." Shalorus grew up farm-tough in a mountain town in northern Iran. His daily workouts were building barns, chopping and hauling wood, taking care of the animals and wrestling. His passport says hes 37 but he admits he doesnt have a birth certificate and doesnt really know his age. While Varner is battling to honour his mom, Shalorus said hell be fighting for his father, a champion wrestler who taught Shalorus but has since died. "This is a big fight for me," said Shalorus. "My father is very important to me. I lost him six years ago." Shalorus is on the fast track to the top in WEC. He made his pro MMA debut just two years ago, but has won his two bouts in the WEC. Also on the card is a featherweight bout between Mark (The Machine) Hominick of Thamesford, Ont., and Yves (Tiger) Jabouin of Montreal. In other action, lightweight Chris (The Polish Hammer) Horodecki of London, Ont., fights American Dan Downes. Highly touted Brazilian Renan Barao challenges Anthony Leone in a bantamweight battle.
