Each week, the NHL on TSN panel voices its opinions on the hot topics of the day in the Wednesday Night Hockey Quiz. Premier Haloti Ngata Jersey . As a follow-up, TSN.ca offers you the opportunity to chime in on all the big issues with our insiders. Question #1: What is the biggest factor in Torontos turnaround since they hit rock bottom back on November 19th, gave up that goal in the last three seconds against Carolina and lost in the shootout? Is it improved play by Francois Beauchemin, Mike Komisarek and the defence, is it Phil Kessel and the offence, or is it better goaltending? Bob McKenzie: Ill say Vesa Toskala. We heard Ron Wilson talk about it. Thats the reason for everything theyve been able to do in terms of building some confidence. Ever since Jonas Gustavsson went down with his heart condition and Toskala came back from injury, thats been the critical factor. Theyve been making some saves and getting some momentum. Keith Jones: For me it is Phil Kessel. He has changed the entire complexion of the Maple Leafs, offensively. When you have a gamebreaker like Kessel, it opens up more ice for everybody. I love the fact that Kessel wants the puck on his stick, he wants to be the guy firing it. It was a terrific off-season move by Brian Burke and its paid huge dividends. Craig MacTavish: Toskala - I agree with Bob. You cannot win at this level if you get outplayed in that position and Toskala did early on in the year - now hes outplaying the opponent so its a huge advantage. Question #2: If you could take one of the Junior-eligible players who is not available because he is playing in the NHL, who would that be? Matt Duchene, Tyler Myers, Steven Stamkos or John Tavares? Jones: For me its Duchene. He would be tremendously motivated, seeing as he did not make the team last year. He just continues to impress me at the NHL level. He gets better with each game played and remember, hes got 20 points for the Avalanche already. Most of those games have been played on the road. Look for his numbers to increase exponentially in the near future. McKenzie: No question, its Steven Stamkos for me. Heres a guy thats in his second NHL season, hes been in hard times lately but hes been ripping it up offensively from last years All-Star break all the way through to now. He has dynamic speed and skill and he uses his speed both on offence and defence. Hes just what the doctor would order for Team Canada. MacTavish: Tavares for me. Give me the goal-scorer. I know I took Myers for who Id build a team around two weeks ago, but Im taking the goal-scorer in a short tournament - its a different animal. Question #3: Thumbs up or thumbs down to potential Phoenix Coyotes owner Ice Edges plan to play five home games in Saskatoon? MacTavish: Thumbs down. "Wild" Bill Hunter is up above smiling down at the prospect of finally getting NHL hockey to Saskatoon, but I dont believe in out-of-sight home games. Another four or five road games for the Coyotes? Thumbs down. Jones: Im a thumbs down, too. This ones easy for me - play in your own home arena, build your own home fan base, and Phoenix dearly needs to play a lot of games and bring in more fans and, the way they played tonight, theyre playing pretty impressively. McKenzie: Thumbs down. If you cant fill your building or you cant make a go of it in 41 home games there, then dont stay there. Question #4: In his rant against David Koci after the hit on Mike Green (see attached video entitled "What Good Is He?"), did Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau, in the immortal words of one Dickie Dunn from Slap Shot, "capture the spirit of the thing" or was that just plain mean-spirited? McKenzie: Ill say he captured the spirit of the thing. Boudreau should know because he was in Slap Shot, and if anybody knows who can play in the American Hockey League, it would be Boudreau. A star player got injured on a cheap shot that Boudreau doesnt believe should be in the NHL. Now people are going to be critical because a coach was critical of a player. Every guy cant be cast for milquetoast - its good for Boudreau to say something interesting and provocative. MacTavish: Mean-spirited. I understand why he said it - he saw a star player lying motionless on the ice. But Ive got some empathy for these tough guys. They do a tough job and a lot of the time theyre really good-energy guys in your locker room. Jones: He captured the spirit for me, I agree with Bob. I like the fact that he went after the player. (Agencies) Updated: 2007-12-14 10:47 LONDON - McLaren accepted on Thursday that Ferrari data had penetrated deeper into their team than suspected and issued a public apology for the spying controversy. Formula One team McLaren on Thursday issued a public apology over their role in the spying saga which rocked the world championship this year. [Agencies] In a statement, the Formula One team also offered to impose a moratorium on the development of three separate systems on their new car to avoid even the possibility of Ferrari information influencing our performance during 2008. In return, the governing International Automobile Federation (FIA) said it would seek to cancel a meeting called for February 14 to assess McLarens 2008 car after a technical report last week raised suspicions about it. The FIA fined McLaren a record $100 million and stripped them of their constructors points in September after concluding that they benefitted from unauthorised possession of Ferrari information. The Mercedes-powered team had risked a further points penalty, one that threatened to hit Briton Lewis Hamiltons title challenge next season, if their 2008 car was found to be tainted with Ferrari data. However the FIA said on Thursday that, subsequent to McLarens apology and undertakings, president Max Mosley had asked the World Motor Sport Council for their consent to cancel the meeting and in the interests of the sport, to consider this matter closed. The 2008 season starts in Australia in March. McLaren wish to make a public apology to the FIA, Ferrari, the Formula One community and to Formula One fans throughout the world, the team said on their Web site (www.mclaren.com). Changes are now being made which will ensure that nothiing comparable to what has taken place will ever happen again. Replica Jerod Mayo Jersey. In a copy of the FIA technical report published on the governing bodys Web site (www.fia.com) on Thursday, senior McLaren engineers were quoted referring to a mole inside Ferrari. McLaren said in their statement that it has become clear that Ferrari information was more widely disseminated within McLaren than was previously communicated. McLaren greatly regrets that its own investigations did not identify this material and has written to the (FIA) World Motor Sport Council to apologise for this. McLaren has also written to the World Motor Sport Council to apologise that it has taken an FIA investigation to find this information and have expressed our deep regret that our understanding of the facts was improved as a result of the FIA inspection rather than our own investigations. The team said they would pay the FIAs costs. McLaren added that they had also conducted a thorough review of policies and procedures regarding the recruitment and management of staff. The proposals arising from this thorough review have been disclosed to the FIA and McLaren has agreed to demonstrate that all of these policies and procedures have been fully implemented. In a separate letter sent by McLaren chief executive Martin Whitmarsh to FIA President Max Mosley before a hearing in Monaco last week, the team revealed how much the controversy had affected them. Apart from the morale-sapping consequence within the team, its ability to continue its task of generating investment has, as I am sure anyone can imagine, been made virtually impossible, wrote Whitmarsh. The long term damage to the teams previously outstanding record and commercial capability is significantly greater than that potentially envisaged by the fiscal penalty that was previously imposed upon the team.
