St. Louis trailed by a run to start the eighth inning, but took the lead in the frame on Heath Bell, who started the inning on the mound. Schumaker led off with a single, but was forced out at second on Miles bunt attempt. Ryan Ludwick then singled, but Ankiel went down swinging for the second out of the inning. However, Glaus then stepped to the plate and slugged a 1-1 pitch into the left-center stands for a 5-3 advantage. Jason Isringhausen came on in the ninth to close out the game, but didnt last. After getting Jody Gerut to ground out to start the frame, Isringhausen gave up a single to Hairston and Edgar Gonzalez followed with a double to right-center to make it a one-run game. After Brian Giles bloop single to center, Isringhausen was pulled from the mound for Thompson. Kevin Kouzmanoff greeted Thompson with a double to center that tied the game. After issuing a free pass to Chase Headley, Carlin grounded into a fielders choice and Adrian Gonzalez followed with a line out to end the frame. Hairston started the contest with a home run, but it took a bit for him to find out. Hairston laced a fly to left field and at the wall Schumaker made a leap for it. The ball knicked the glove and went over the fence, but it was initially ruled a ground-rule double as it was thought that the ball hit off the top of the fence then went over. After a huddle of the umpires, it was ruled a home run and Hairston was allowed to cross the plate. However, the Cardinals got the run back in the bottom of the first. Schumaker led off the inning with a single, but was caught stealing. Miles then punched a single to center and later came home when Ankiel blasted a double off the right field fence. The Padres, though, regained the lead in the fifth. Nick Hundley was able to start the inning by reaching first as he swung at strike three, but the ball got past LaRue. After Luis Rodriguez grounded out, Baek roped a pitch into the center field stands to help his cause to a 3-1 lead. After the first inning, Baek kept the St. Louis offense in check as he allowed just two more baserunners through the first six innings. The Cardinals, though, got to Baek in the seventh and chased the pitcher from the game. Glaus led off with a single and then moved to second on Chris Duncans fly out to center. On the play, Hairston fielded the fly ball cleanly, but he threw the ball away trying to double up Glaus at first. After LaRue singled to put runners on the corners, Mike Adams took the mound. Pujols entered the game as a pinch-hitter and delivered a sac fly to left that scored Glaus and made it a 3-2 contest. Adams then got Adam Kennedy to strike out and end the inning.
