Sad, so sad. New England Patriots Hernandez Jersey . A promising athlete gone at such a young age. The Maritimes are still reeling about the sudden death of 21-year-old Luc Bourdon. Bourdon, a defenceman, was the first round draft choice of the Vancouver Canucks in 2005 and spent some time with the team and their AHL affiliate this past season. The young star died Thursday after losing control of his brand new motorcycle and crashing head-on into a tractor-trailer on Highway 113, a two lane, winding main road, between his home town of Shippagan and Tracadie-Shelia, in north eastern New Brunswick. Shippagan is a town of 3,000 located 35kms from Bathurst. Bourdon was a hockey star in this part of the country and became a name when he played in the QMJHL with teams such as Val-dOr, Moncton and the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. But he really became known when he made Team Canada and the World Juniors in 2006 and 2007. The fact is that in the past few years there are so few players who make the loaded Team Canada World Junior roster taken from the Q league and fewer from the Maritimes who have made it. In fact, just a handful of players from the Maritimes have ever played for Team Canada. Players such as Sidney Crosby, Steven Dixon and Bourdon were on that very selective list. To make the Team Canada Juniors from anywhere in Canada is an accomplishment but to make it from what amounts to a tiny fishing place in New Brunswick is something else. Just as Crosby has been the face of not only Nova Scotia but of Cole Harbour (suburb of Halifax) in particular, Luc Bourdon was the face, even at this early stage, of Shippagan and area. He played a key role in Canadas gold-winning teams at the 2006 and 2007 World Junior championships. He made the all-star team at the 2006 Worlds and at the 2007 event in Sweden. It was Bourdon who scored the third-period goal that tied the game and forced overtime against the U.S. in the semifinal. "Its sad, very sad," is what NHL coach Ted Nolan told the TV cameras from Sault Ste Marie when he heard the news. "He was big, strong, could skate, could shoot and could score," he said of Bourdon. Nolan coached the Shippagan native during his stay with the Moncton Wildcats. "As they say… he had it all," explained Nolan. The Vancouver Canucks obviously thought so as they made Bourdon their first draft choice (10th overall) in 2005. He was also, according to his uncle Robert Boucher, a practical joker and very well liked. "He loved to laugh, to smile and to have fun," said Boucher speaking for the family regarding the tragic event. "And, he was one of the first to give a hand to people, not only to his family but to just about anyone." There are stories circulating in the small town of Bourdon going to the hospital to see kids and not wanting it to be known and even a resident or two who said he did help some elderly people with the backyard chores. Boucher said that this was Bourdons first real vacation in five years. "It was always hockey. Q hockey, World Junior tryouts in the summer, hockey in the fall to spring, trying to make the Canucks. Hockey, hockey, hockey. This was his first time he had time to have fun," explained Boucher. As for the motorcycle which ended up by talking his life it is something hes wanted for a long, long time. He wanted to join his friends and other young people on bikes in his region but had not done so because his mother was set against it. He held off against buying a bike last year but did so this season. He had recently completed a motorcycle safety course. He just got his license and according to the police who are still investigating the case, the inexperience and weather conditions may have been a contributing factor at the time of the noon-hour crash that took Bourdons life and shattered his Suzuki GSX-R1000. "Were looking into it and are trying to piece exactly what happened," said RCMP spokesman Inspector Roch Fortin. "There was a considerable amount of wind when the accident happened." Fortin says there is no evidence the driver of the tractor-trailer did anything wrong. "He did everything to prevent the accident," said Fortin. Bourdon had just completed his first full season as a pro, appearing in 27 games with the Vancouver Canucks where he scored two goals. He had 14 points over 41 games with the Canucks AHL affiliate, the Manitoba Moose. Rick Bowness, a Canucks assistant coach, a man born in New Brunswick, got to know Bourdon and said: "I met him at training camp in 2006, told him I was from the Maritimes and we developed a strong relationship. He was very coachable. I watched him grow from a 19-year old who was in awe and maybe uncertain of the pressures of a first round pick into a young man who was smart enough certain changes had to be made to his game and was prepared to work hard and make those changes. That says a lot about his character." Hockey is big in this country, very big in the small centers of Canada and there are so few Atlantic Canadians who make the grade that to have one from such a small area do so and now he is no longer with us is shocking, stunning and very sad. Right now, most of Newfoundland is following the Stanley Cup journey of Dan Cleary of the Wings. No one from his province has ever won the Stanley Cup. Hockey and small towns is big and Bourdon was a major player in this small Acadian community. When anyone makes the majors in any sport from New Brunswick it is big news. Fredericton is home to Blue Jays D.H. Matt Stairs and people in that area are very proud of his accomplishments and what he has done in a long major league career. The only other well known athlete from the Bourdon neck of the words is former major league pitcher Rheal Cormier. Cormier had a 16-year major league career with five different clubs. In fact Bourdons funeral will take place at the Rheal Cormier Centre on Monday. "There is little doubt this area lost a future big time ambassador for the province and this region. Luc was our star, our model and future ambassador," said Gilles Cormier who coached Bourdon in minor hockey. It hasnt been a good year in so far as tragic accidents for this part of New Brunswick. The crash that claimed Bourdons life took place not far from Bathurst, where another sports-related accident in January killed seven members of the Bathurst High School basketball team and an adult. At the crash site near Shippagan local residents have made a makeshift Memorial that include a photo of Bourdon with the message: "Au revoir, Luc." One of Bourdons good friends who he met via the Team Canada Junior route is defenceman Kris Letang of the Penguins. Letang played with Bourdon for a couple of seasons with Val dOr and spent two years together with Team Canada Juniors. They played together, they were roommates together and shared just about everything together. "We were best of friends," said Letang. The NHL will honour Bourdon with a moment of silence prior to game four of the Stanley Cup. It bad enough and sad enough when anyone dies but to have such potential as an athlete and maybe even more as a decent human being and to have it instantly wiped out at age 21 is tragic and sad. So very sad. For TSNs Im Alex J. Walling AJ can be reached via email at: [email protected] Buffalo Bills Merriman Jersey . Choo also doubled, while Huff allowed two runs on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts for the Indians, who salvaged a win in the series and snapped a five-game slide in the process. Chris Wells Jersey . Its what has made this international event so intriguing to even the most average fan every four years. Weve already witnessed the two goliaths of this tournament -- Russia and Canada -- knocked off their perch in the preliminary round. Weve seen the new-look and top-seeded Americans -- fast, physical and five years younger per man than the 2006 team that failed to medal in Torino -- earn their first Olympic triumph over Canada in 50 years. Steelers Mendenhall Jersey . First star honours go to Bruins centre Marc Savard, who led all NHL scorers with two goals and six assists last week. Garon, who had won 3-0 in his last two starts, was 8-0-4 in home games with a 1.96 goals-against average and a .930 save percenttage in 15 games over two seasons in Columbus.
