The profits of large companies rose 34 percent year-on-year to 645.5 billion yuan in the January-February period, but the growth rate was 15 percentage points lower than that in the first 11 months of 2010. [Photo China Daily] The Jan-Feb growth rate of 34 percent was significantly lower than that in the year-ago period BEIJING - The profit growth of Chinas large industrial companies registered a year-on-year 34 percent increase in the first two months of this year, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Sunday. The rate was significantly lower than the 119.7 percent year-on-year growth achieved in the first two months of 2010, the highest in two years, the NBS said. The companies profits were 645.5 billion yuan ($98 billion) in the January-February period, but the year-on-year growth rate was 15 percentage points lower than the 49 percent achieved in the first 11 months of 2010. A rapid rise in production costs and more monetary tightening measures may continue to hurt business earnings, analysts said. Soaring commodity prices in global markets drove up manufacturers costs for raw materials, fuel and energy, and have become one of the most important factors in shrinking profit margins, said a report jointly released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the Institute of Industrial Economics at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. Chinas Producer Price Index (PPI), the gauge of factory-gate prices, jumped 7.2 percent last month from a year earlier, pushed by rising raw material prices. The countrys inflation index exceeded expectations in February, rising to 4.9 percent year-on-year. Industrial manufacturers are under increasing pressure from rising labor costs resulting from higher consumer inflation, said Huang Yiping, a professor at the National School of Development at Peking University. Wages will rise faster in the next five years, he said. It is the time for companies to innovate technologically, take advantage of financial instruments and pay more attention to intellectual property protection, which are the keys to earn sustainable profits, said Huang. Huang is also worried that tight monetary policies may slow the worlds second-largest economy without any transitional period, and that will be very harmful for domestic enterprises. The central bank also raised interest rates in February for the third time since October to curb bank lending. Lu Zhengwei, a senior economist at Industrial Bank Co Ltd, said Chinas Consumer Price Index (CPI), a key gauge of inflation, is predicted to rise as high as 5.2 percent in March, compared with 4.9 percent in February. There may be another rise in the banks reserve requirement ratio in the first half of April, and one more hike in interest rates in the second half, said Lu. According to the statistic bureau, 38 out of the 39 industries surveyed reported profit growth during the two-month period, while the chemical material and products industries had the highest profit growth rate. The NBS also said that it has updated the definition for the countrys so-called above-scale enterprises since the beginning of this year. This now refers to those with an annual sales volume of more than 20 million yuan, up from 5 million yuan previously. According to a March 8 statement from the NBS, based on 2009 figures, the number of companies involved will decrease by 40.6 percent after the change. The Bishops Gaiters star receiver and special-teams ace headlines a small group of Canadian-born university football players expected to garner interest in this weeks NFL draft, which begins Thursday. Whether its as a late-round pick or undrafted free agent, all Turner is hoping for is the opportunity to shag punts and kickoffs this summer at an NFL training camp and prove he can crack an NFL roster as a special-teams player. "It doesnt matter to me if its as a late-round draft pick or undrafted free agent," said Turner. "All I need is the opportunity to get into a camp and show what I can do." The NFL draft kicks off Thursday night with the first round, followed by the second and third rounds Friday and the last four rounds Saturday. The five-foot-nine, 185-pound Turner was a special-teams dynamo last year. He was Canadian university footballs top punt returner, averaging a stellar 20.4 yards per return while taking two back for TDs. Then in March, Turner raised eyebrows at the CFL evaluation camp by posting a 40-yard dash record time of 4.31 seconds. The day before, he had a vertical leap of 43.5 inches -- just a half-inch shy of the event record -- and a camp-best shuttle run of 4.03 seconds. Turners performance boosted his stock for the CFLs Canadian college draft May 2 but also attracted interest south of the border. His 40-yard dash time and vertical jump wouldve placed him second in both events at the NFL combine, where league officials gather annually to test and interview the top-rated NCAA draft prospects. Shortly after the CFL evaluation camp Turner, a Toronto native who grew up in Brampton, Ont., spoke with both the Philadelphia Eagles and Indianapolis Colts. "Its just a waiting game right now," said Turner. "Im always thinking about what might happen. "Im just hoping for the best." Vaughn Martin, a defensive lineman with the Western Mustangs, was the lone Canadian drafted in 2009, going in the fourth round to the San Diego Chargers. But the expectation is if Turner or any other Canadian university product gets to an NFL camp this year it will be as undrafted free agent. But it still makes economic sense for a Canadian player to go considering the NFLs minimum salary this year is US$325,000. Even as a CFL first-round pick, Turner could expect a five-figure signing bonus and a salary between $40,000 and $45,000, depending on where he was selected. Heres a look at some of the other top Canadian talent available for the NFL draft, in no particular order: Cory Greenwood: A CFL source requesting anonymity tells The Canadian Press that he has received inquiries from upwards of six NFL teams about the six-foot-two, 219-pound Concordia linebacker. Replicas Brett Favre Jersey. Greenwood, of Kingston, Ont., is ranked No. 3 by the CFLs scouting bureau and is a bona fide first-round CFL draft prospect. He had a solid showing at the leagues evaluation camp, posting 24 reps in the bench press, a 40-yard dash time of 4.50 seconds and a 40-inch vertical jump. Like Turner, Greenwood would have to earn his stripes in the NFL on special teams. Joel Reinders: The six-foot-eight, 316-pound Waterloo Warriors offensive lineman certainly has the size NFL teams like. The native of Oakville, Ont., is very highly regarded by CFL officials, who consider him a blue-chip prospect and definite first-round pick. Reinders is ranked No. 11 by the CFL scouting Bureau but the general consensus is hell need time to hone his skills, something that will be much easier to come by in Canada than in the NFL as an undrafted free agent. Reinders posted 18 reps in the bench press at the CFL evaluation camp, which isnt ideal for an offensive lineman. Jordan Sisco: The Regina Rams receiver had 60 catches for 861 yards and five touchdowns in 2009 and was named a Canada West all-star for the second straight year. The six-foot-one, 212-pound Regina native also was invited to the 2010 East-West Shrine Bowl game, which means hes not only been exposed to NFL coaching but has competed against NCAA players. Whats more, the Indianapolis Colts worked Sisco out. Shomari Williams: The Queens linebacker is well known to CFL officials as the top-ranked player by the leagues scouting bureau. And with good reason as Williams helped Queens win the Vanier Cup in his first season with the squad. The six-foot-two, 236-pound Toronto native came to Queens after three seasons at the University of Houston so NFL officials should have some familiarity with Williams. He certainly has the speed (4.66 seconds in 40-yard dash) and tenacity to play special teams in the NFL. Shawn Gore: The six-foot-one, 200-pound Toronto native has reportedly garnered some NFL interested after a solid showing at the CFL evaluation camp, where he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.50 seconds and had a 39.5-inch vertical jump. Gore also had a standing broad jump of 10 feet three inches and has garnered some interest from south of the border. Gore has the quickness to excel on special teams but also had 37 catches for 610 yards and five touchdowns last season with Bishops. ' ' '
