Yes, I did take Shawn Green over Joe Carter but was not giving Green the nod as the more important figure in team history. Carter wins the historical debate hands down but Green had a monster year in 2000. Anyway, in part two I picked my top pitching staff for the Jays. The starting five were pretty simple to choose. While Doyle Alexander and David Wells got some consideration, they are not in the starting five. 1 - Roy Halladay (RHP): My pick as the best pitcher to ever wear the uniform. In his Cy Young year of 2003 he was 22-7, 3.25, 204 K and only 32 walks with 9 complete games over 266 IP. 2 - Roger Clemens (RHP): Let the arguments begin but for now, hes in. Despite all the controversy, his first season with the Jays in 1997 was amazing (21-7, 2.07, 1.030 WHIP, 292 K over 264 IP and only gave up 9 homers). 3 - Jimmy Key (LHP): Really cemented himself as one of the top left-handers in baseball in 1987. He was 17-8, 2.76, 161 K over 261 IP. Finished second to Clemens in Cy Young voting. 4 - Dave Stieb (RHP): The Jays first legitimate ace and one of the top pitchers of the 80s. Stiebs nasty slider, and at times nasty temper, produced several memorable campaigns. I took his 1984 season (16-8, 2.83, 198 K, 11 complete games in 267 IP). 5 - Pat Hentgen (RHP): One of my favourite Jays. He was outstanding in his Cy Young year of 1996. He was 20-10 with a 3.22 ERA and 10 complete games over 265.2 IP. Always admired him for taking the heat after a loss, he was never shy about admitting he didnt perform well. The bullpen presented a tougher task. I could have loaded up with closers and have a bullpen with Tom Henke, Duane Ward, B.J. Ryan and Billy Koch but it would have been too easy. First up, the closers spot. Have your say about the top closer in this poll. While Ryan has put up some impressive numbers (I feel a bit guilty for leaving his 2006 season out), any discussion of a Jays all-time stopper comes down to Henke and Ward. With much respect to Henke, and Ryan, Ward gets the nod. Sure, he only spent one season as closer but what a season it was. He was dominant (2-3, 45 SV, 2.13, 97 K, over 71.2 IP). Now to further confuse things and for the purposses of putting together an all-time bullpen, Ward is the set-up man. Replica Eagles Jersey. The reason being, the Henke-Ward combo was too valuable to consider breaking up and if Ward is the closer, Henke, having not held the set-up role would be out. So, here it is. Closer - Tom Henke (RHP): The Terminator got the job done for eight seasons in Toronto. I took his 1989 campaign (8-3, 20 SV, 1.92, 116 K in 89 IP). Although the save total was not very high, he was almost unhittable in the second half of the season (2-0, 15 SV, 0.91 in the second half). Set-up - Duane Ward (RHP): Ward was a major reason the Jays won back-to-back series titles and since he cant be closer, I took his 1991 numbers (7-6, 23 SV, 132 K, 2.77 over 107.1 IP). Reliever - Mark Eichhorn (RHP): Had an incredible season in 1986 with his funky side-arm delivery (14-6, 10 SV, 1.72, 166 K, 0.955 WHIP in 157 IP). Reliever - Dennis Lamp (RHP): Sure, the numbers might be a little deceptive but its hard to argue with a guy who can avoid a loss for a season (11-0, 2 SV, 3.32, 105.2 IP, 1 GS). Reliever - David Wells (LHP): Very effective as a reliever in 1989 (7-4, 2 SV, 2.40 ERA, 86 IP). Also, had a great nickname. Thats my list, now feel free to pass on yours. Click the Your Call button below or drop us a line at [email protected] and maybe well put it up. Jack Morris had a great season in 1992 and he deserves to be on the list but Im not sure who you should take out. My first instinct is Clemens. Id make Ward my closer and make sure that Kelvim Escobar is on the list, he sould start and close games. For a lefty Id pick Dan Plesac. Id also have Mike Timlin because he had some good seasons in Toronto. Chris I agree with almost everyone. But Im not sure how you can miss Paul Quantral on the reliever list. The guy was amazing. Darrell DC: You are not alone, see below. You starting five are fine but Stieb should be the number 1 because he was the best thing about the franchise for so many years. It should go 1 Stieb, 2 Halladay, 3 Key, 4 Clemens, 5 Hentgen. With the bullpen I would make Ryan the closer, Ward set-up, Eichcorn as RHP and Downs as LHP and to get he last spot filled Id take Quantrill because hes a good Canadian kid. Jerry D. ' ' '
