Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - Drew Stubbs went 3-for-4 with a double and home run, as the Cincinnati Reds edged the Pittsburgh Pirates, 7-5, in the opener of a four-game series at Great American Ball Park. Starter Aaron Harang (3-5) had an RBI single in the Reds five-run fourth inning, and also got the win. Harang allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits and two walks in 6 1/3 innings, and struck out three. Francisco Cordero worked a scoreless ninth for his 15th save. Pirates starter Brian Burres (2-2) took the loss after giving up five runs, four of which were earned, in 3 2/3 frames. He walked four and allowed five hits. Ronny Cedeno went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer for Pittsburgh, which has lost four of five. Cedenos homer in the second inning gave Pittsburgh a 2-0 lead, but the Reds got a run back in the home half on Stubbs RBI double, then seized control in the fourth. Walks to Jonny Gomes and Jay Bruce, followed by a Stubbs single, loaded the bases with no outs. Ryan Hanigan grounded into a double play, but a run scored on the play to even the game. Harang then singled to left to plate Bruce, who was left on third after the double play. Cabrera came up next and doubled to the left-center gap, and Harang managed to score from first, barely beating the throw home as he jogged across the plate. Burres was removed for Jeff Karstens, but Brandon Phillips singled to score Cabrera from third, and Joey Vottos subsequent double plated Phillips for a 6-2 advantage. In the fifth, Stubbs hammered a hanging breaking ball to left for a two-out solo homer. "Pitchers try to make good pitches with two outs," Stubbs said. "You just have to lay off the bad ones and swing at the good ones." Harang ran into trouble in the seventh. With Cedeno on base after a leadoff single, Harang walked Akinori Iwamura with one away before Delwyn Young pulled a first-pitch changeup down the right field line for a double. The hit plated both runners to make it a 7-4 game and ended Harangs day. Enerio Del Rosario, who was making his major-league debut, entered and struck out Andrew McCutchen. But a passed ball allowed McCutchen to reach base, leaving runners at the corners with one out. Del Rosario was lifted for Daniel Ray Herrera, who gave up a sacrifice fly to Garrett Jones before getting out of the inning on a groundout by Ryan Church. Arthur Rhodes worked around a leadoff single by Jeff Clement to throw a scoreless eighth, and Cordero kept the Pirates scoreless in the ninth. Cordero gave up a one-out double to Young, but retired the next two batters to end the game. "We came back and had a chance, thats all you can ask for." Pirates manager John Russell said. "Hopefully its a good sign were swinging the bats a little better."
